What is Assam Tea?
Assam tea refers to the black tea produced in Assam, India. It has a malt flavor and is bright black in color. it is also known as a breakfast tea or Irish breakfast tea. What is the history of Assam Tea?
In 1823, Assam tea was discovered by a Scottish adventurer, Robert Bruce, who noticed tea-like plants growing wild near Rangpur. Bessa Gam who was the local Singpho chief showed Bruce how local tribesmen brewed tea from leaves of this bush. However, Robert Bruce passed away before any substantial classification could be made. Later Robert Bruce’s brother, Charles, sent a sample of these leaves to a botanical garden in Calcutta to get it classified as tea and named it - Assamica. What are the Tea grades produced in Assam?
Both orthodox, as well as CTC variants of black tea, are produced in Assam. Whole leave, broken leave, fanning and dust are produced - of which the latter three are a form of CTC. In Assam, full harvesting is done twice a year. The first flush begins in late March and goes until late May. The second flush starts in June and makes for the famous tippy tea.
